Whether you’re looking for thrilling adventures or a chance to just put your feet up and relax, you are definitely spoilt for choice in New Zealand. Whether you’re spending time in the North or South Island, you won’t run out of things to do and places to go.
The best way to travel to these destinations of course, is to jump in a campervan from Cheapa Campa from either our Auckland or Christchurch branches and celebrate Christmas of 2016 in absolute comfort and style. If you’re still a bit undecided where to go and what to do in New Zealand this Christmas, we’ve come up with a number of places you can drive your camper hire to.
When You’re In The North Island
After picking up your Cheapa campervan from our Auckland branch, Drive for 5.3 kilometres on SH 16 to the Museum Of Transport And Technology for the annual Christmas Lights celebration, happening from 15 to 24 December this year, between 8 pm to 11 pm.
Christmas in Auckland also means that many locals are away on holiday and that you pretty much have the city to yourself (and about a hundred or so other visitors, LOL!). So explore the city centre and take photos of the remarkable architecture minus the huge holiday crowds.
After a day of strolling, drive your campervan for 26 kilometres on State Highway 1 to Auckland Botanic Gardens. Lay out a picnic and relax amidst thousands of plants from all over the world. If you want to see more of the city, go on a city tour with the family and see Mission Bay, Mt. Eden, The Sky Tower and the Wintergardens.
Driving to the heart of North Island will take you to the country’s most popular family attractions. Start by spending the day at Hobbiton, and experience life in Tolkien’s Middle Earth. As you spend the day marvelling at the beauty of the shire, you can listen to the commentary about how this village came to life.
If you’re spending the holidays in Wellington, you shouldn’t miss the region’s vibrant art scene. And this means visiting Te Papa – famous for its engrossing exhibits that the entire family will enjoy. There are also a number of art galleries you can take the family to for greater appreciation of the island’s vibrant art and culture.
When You’re In The South Island
Experience the natural beauty of New Zealand and drop by our Christchurch branch and get a campervan. Because there is no better way to enjoy the island’s natural beauty than driving from one destination to the next.
Genteel is a word that best describes Christchurch and it is best enjoyed at a relaxed pace. Hire a boat and paddle down the Avon River or lay a picnic lunch at the beautifully maintained Botanic Gardens.
Kaikoura on the other hand offers a more exciting, one-of-a-kind holiday experience. Not only is the town a favourite whale watching destination, it is also the home to various wildlife experiences your family will love. Go on wildlife tours – there are tours offered multiple times every day – and take a break at one of the town’s chic restaurants.
Spend the night beneath the beautiful star-studded sky of Lake Tekapo. But don’t forget, the lake is breathtaking during the day too. So take snapshots of the turquoise waters and colourful lupins in full bloom during December.
No visit to New Zealand’s South Island is complete without spending a day or two at Queenstown. For breathtaking views of Lake Wakatipu and the city of Queensland itself, ride the Skyline Gondola. If you prefer to see the region’s natural beauty from the water, the vintage steamship TSS Earnslaw offers cruises and other activities. From Queenstown, it’s a little under 4 hours drive to Milford Sound, described by Rudyard Kipling as the “Eight Wonder Of The World”.
New Zealand without a doubt is one of the most enchanting places in the world. A country brimming with breathtaking natural beauty, exciting adventures and activities your entire family will enjoy. If you’re not visiting with the family this Christmas, when will you do it? Beat the holiday rush and secure a Cheapa Campa vehicle today!
